Webinar Replay: How to Successfully Code for ICD-10 – Ophthalmology

There are many differences between ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes.  ICD-10-CM far exceeds its predecessors in the number of concepts and codes provided.  It contains 21 chapters, compared with 17 chapters in ICD-9-CM.  The disease classification has been expanded to include health-related conditions and to provide greater specificity at the sixth and seventh character level.  Some of the key differences to note are that:

ICD-10 – Ophthalmology Practices

1.    ICD-10 consists of alphanumeric categories rather than numeric categories.
2.    ICD-10 contains approximately 79,000 codes, compared to the 14,000 codes in ICD-9.
3.    New chapters have been added (an example of this is that “Diseases of the Eye and Adnexa” has been moved to its own separate chapter).
4.    Some titles have been changed and/or rearranged (a good example of this would be the Endocrine, Nutritional and Metabolic Diseases, and Immunity Disorders which was previously Chapter 3, will now be Chapter 4 and called Endocrine, Nutritional and Metabolic Diseases).
5.    Conditions have been regrouped (an example of this would be that diseases and conditions of the eyes and ears have been removed from the nervous system section and now have their own Chapter).
